In a society where assimilating to the things that society deems as standard, it isn't easy to learn how to be your authentic self or even know who your authentic self is. Society allows comparison to be regular and doesn't allow us to be ourselves truly but constantly feeling like we have to be like the next or above the next. We are continually being fed what society deems as beautiful, innovative, and successful. May is National Mental Health Awareness, and we will be focusing on tapping into our authentic self.
Here 14 ways you can tap into your authentic self.
1. SAY "NO"
Before tapping into your authentic self, distance yourself from anything that doesn't serve you or bring you peace. This step is not easy but necessary in moving into tapping into the real you. You need to be surrounded by things that will help you grow and give you the space to explore YOU without negativity.
2. KEEP A POSITIVE MINDSET
Instead of seeing the glass half empty, Look at the glass half full. Shifting your mindset this way allows you manifest a more positive environment. Your mind drives your thoughts, goals, dreams, ambitions, and actions. Therefore if you continue to entertain a negative mindset, it will only slow down your progress. It does not mean negative emotions and thoughts won't arise, but it is essential to see the positive in every situation, using the glass half full mindset.
3. SET GOALS
Setting goals allows you to keep note of your progress and establish trust in your abilities. When setting goals, you can see your strengths and weaknesses, which helps you hone in on your strengths and accept things that you can't do, which is ok, be realistic with yourself. You don't have to be good at everything, but if there are things you want to work on, do it.
4. EMBRACE CHANGE
Life is full of unexpected events, and it can be hard to stick to your exact plans. Change can be uncomfortable and can feel like you don't have control of life, but embracing change allows you to make shifts and adjustments in your life to make changes as life's unexpected events arise. Be open to adjusting your plans.
5. INVEST IN YOURSELF
Did you know that you are your greatest asset? Well, YOU ARE! Do things that YOU like to do, such as investing in your hobbies, learn something new, work on your spirituality, health, whatever YOU need and want to do, do it for you. 6. EMOTIONAL HEALTH
Are you in touch with your emotions? Feeling emotions is not weak but is an expression of how we feel. We go through so many emotions throughout life, such as sadness, disappointment, hurt, happiness, anger, confusion, tiredness; the list goes on. Emotions are normal and should be acknowledged. Permit yourself to feel; this allows you to tap into what triggers your emotions and therefore learning how to understand and create healthy outlets and coping mechanisms.
7. SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF
The truth is showing up for yourself can be exhausting; that's the truth. But if you don't show up for yourself, who will? What does showing up for yourself look like for you? It means consistently taking steps in bettering yourself; you know what that looks like for you. Consistency is key as long as you continue to take steps in improving yourself.

8. SPEND 30 MIN ALONE
Spending time with yourself allows you to get to know yourself better to tap into your authentic self. Do you know your deepest desires? You can take this time to journal your thoughts, explore your mind, have conversations with yourself without distractions.
9. CELEBRATE YOU
Never, ever downplay your achievements. Celebrate every accomplishment, big or small. We can sometimes, not on purpose, take some things for granted. But when we celebrate ALL of our achievements, we can acknowledge that we are progressing and create a positive attitude towards ourselves and focus on the things that we are doing that are working for us.
10. SPEAK KINDLY TO YOURSELF
Your words matter and have power. In Proverbs 15:4, "Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit." A positive tongue brings life, and a negative tongue crushes your spirit. Make speaking affirmations a routine, whether you do them in the morning, afternoon, or night setting the tone for your day gives life to your environment. 11. STAY IN YOUR LANE
Comparison is the thief of joy! Focus on YOU! How can you tap into your authentic self if you are worried about someone else? Your journey through life is not the same as someone else. You are unique, and so is your path; focus on YOU.
12. PRACTICE SELF CARE
Practicing self-care allows you to practice loving yourself and taking care of yourself a priority. Make scheduling Self Care on your To-Do List a normality.
13. FORGIVE YOURSELF
Give yourself GRACE! We can sometimes be our worst critics. However, it is essential to understand that we are humans and we are not perfect. We make mistakes, so allow yourself to make room for your failures so that you can learn from them and, in turn, learn more about yourself with freedom of judgment.
14. WRITE OUT WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU
TAP INTO YOU, FR (for real)! How would you describe yourself? What drives you? What is your personality like? What fuels you? Dig deep into what makes YOU, YOU.
